Captain William Kidd was hanged for piracy and murder at Wapping on May 23rd 1701. After death his body was placed in a metal cage or gibbet and hung on the edge of the Thames at a place called Tilbury Point (or possibly Tilburyness). Tilbury Point is at Tilbury Docks, but Tilburyness is shown on a map from 1588 as being at East Tilbury (modern day Coalhouse Point).
We'll probably never know for sure, but a BBC documentary has used the East Tilbury foreshore to recreate the scene of Kidd's gibbet. Later in the programme presenter Dr Sam Willis can be seen walking through Coalhouse Fort, which represents a pirate prison!
